About the Book

Inscriptions of the Vijayanagara Rulers, Volume IV: Telugu Inscriptions (A.D. 1351–1665) is a major scholarly compilation published under the “Inscriptions of India Programme” of the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR). This volume represents the Telugu component of the Vijayanagara epigraphical corpus and significantly expands the source material available for the study of the empire. The book contains 585 Telugu inscriptions, with occasional Sanskrit portions, carefully compiled from a wide range of published sources including South Indian Inscriptions, Epigraphia Indica, Epigraphia Andhrica, district inscription volumes, and various academic journals. Each inscription is presented with detailed information such as find-spots, dates, and concise summaries, arranged systematically in chronological order.Geographically, the inscriptions are drawn primarily from Andhra Pradesh, with a concentration in the Rayalaseema region, including districts such as Anantapur, Chittoor, and Kurnool, along with examples from neighbouring regions. These inscriptions provide rich and nuanced insights into the political, social, cultural, and literary history of the Vijayanagara Empire. They also introduce new data and enable fresh interpretations, making the volume an essential resource for historians, epigraphists, and scholars of South Indian history.

About the Series

This volume is part of the “Inscriptions of India Programme” launched by the Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR). The programme seeks to systematically collect, edit, and publish inscriptions from different regions and dynasties across India. Given that inscriptions are often dispersed across multiple publications and archives, the series provides consolidated, annotated, and accessible volumes arranged chronologically and dynasty-wise. The Vijayanagara inscriptions project forms a dedicated sub-series within this programme, covering inscriptions in Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, and Sanskrit across multiple volumes.
