About the book:
The Wodeyars of Mysore played a pivotal role in shaping Karnataka’s history and culture from 1399 until India’s independence. This book traces their nearly five-century-long rule, during which 25 kings enriched the state’s heritage. Despite being smaller in size compared to the Vijayanagara Empire, the Mysore kingdom stood out for its valor and administrative innovations. One significant milestone was the establishment of 18 administrative offices, known as the Athara Kacheri, by Chikkadevaraya in the late 17th century. The book also explores how Mummadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar promoted Kannada literature and opposed the British promotion of Christianity through his support for the Krishnavilasa Press. The Mysore kingdom’s contribution to social causes is highlighted, including Swami Vivekananda’s visit in 1892 and the establishment of the Sadananda Vardhini Sabha for Dalit upliftment. The achievements of Maharani Kempananjamma and Sir M. Visvesvaraya, such as the construction of the Shivanasamudra hydropower project and the founding of Mysore University, are also documented. This commemorative issue, published by the Mythic Society, brings together 28 research articles—17 in Kannada and 11 in English—originally featured in *QJMS* and *Itihasa Darshana*. It offers a deep dive into the Wodeyars' lasting contributions, from the famous Mysore Dasara festival to the modernization of Mysore under Sir M. Visvesvaraya.
