About the book:
The book on Vijayanagara's heritage, with a focus on Hampi, offers a unique perspective on the historical and architectural evolution of this medieval Indian marvel. Hampi, the heart of the Vijayanagara Empire, is a site of immense historical significance and continues to draw tourists and researchers from around the world. Over the years, the Archaeological Survey of India and the Directorate of Antiquities and Museums, Government of Karnataka, have taken significant steps to restore, explore, and preserve these monuments. Their ongoing efforts have brought to light new aspects of Hampi’s architectural heritage, providing a rich field for comparative studies.
A key highlight of the book is the inclusion of rare photographs taken at three different points in history: 1856, 1983, and 2008. The earliest photographs, taken by Alexander J. Greenlaw in 1856, offer an invaluable glimpse into Hampi’s monuments as they stood over a century and a half ago. These images are not just historical records but also evoke a deep sense of the spiritual and cultural essence of the site during that period. In 1983, the renowned photographer John Gollings revisited Hampi, capturing the monuments in a different light and adding a layer to the visual documentation of this historic site.
Recognizing the significance of documenting the changes and conservation efforts over time, the book presents a comparative study of the monuments across these three periods. The 2008 photographs, taken by the Directorate, showcase the results of decades of archaeological work, highlighting the ongoing restoration and preservation efforts that have transformed the site. This visual and textual documentation allows readers to appreciate the dynamic changes in Hampi’s landscape and the meticulous care taken to preserve its rich heritage.
