About the Book

Architecture and Structure of Educational Institutions in the Deccan (7th–14th Centuries CE) is a pioneering work that explores the architectural and epigraphical dimensions of ancient learning centers in Karnataka and Maharashtra. Drawing from extensive field studies, inscriptions, and structural documentation, this book reinterprets several early medieval monuments that were previously identified as temples.

Prof. Shrinivas V. Padigar presents compelling evidence to establish that many of these monuments—such as the Traipurushasalas at Aihole, Nagavi, and Belur, and the Mathas and Sarasvati Mantapas within temple complexes—functioned as educational institutions during the 7th–14th centuries CE. Through detailed architectural analysis and references from inscriptions, the book reveals how these centers were designed to facilitate teaching, learning, and scholarly gatherings.

Supported by the Infosys Foundation’s Academic Development Programme at the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute (BORI), Pune, the research investigates the organization, patronage, curricula, and staff structures associated with these institutions. Richly illustrated with plans, photographs, and translations of relevant inscriptions, this book provides invaluable insight into the evolution of educational architecture in the medieval Deccan.

This study serves as an essential resource for scholars of Indian architecture, epigraphy, archaeology, and educational history, offering a new understanding of the intellectual landscape that shaped medieval South India.
